Quote of the Day: "I would be the most content if my children grew up to be the kind of people who think decorating consists mostly of building enough bookshelves."
— Anna Quindlen, U.S. writer (1953- )
http://www.screamfree.com/resources/partners/template/images/hal_runkel.jpg Hal's Take: Jenny here – Obviously, Hal and I agree with Ms. Quindlen on this one. We are both learners at heart and love to surround ourselves with books. Although our tastes and reading styles differ dramatically, we share this commonality. And we want our kids to as well. We want our kids to be filled with curiosity and wonder long after their “wonder years” are gone. We want them to be interested in life. In people. In ideas. Books nurture those things better than almost anything else.
If we can raise kids who turn to books when they want to relax instead of chat rooms or video games, we will have done something really special. That will take a good amount of effort. It will mean turning off technology and suffering through the initial whining complaints of the children, but we firmly believe that the rewards will far outweigh the costs.

Thankfully, even with as much video game time and TV, my children all enjoy a good book. I frequently have to tell my 8 year old boys to turn off their light well past the time they were supposed to do it. They get so engrossed in their books and that is a good thing. I have lost my love of reading over the past few years as I have gotten more connected on the internet. I need to take a lesson from my kids, it seems.

My dd loves to read. She is currently reading a mermaid series that is for grade 8's. I'm so proud of her because she's in grade 4 and has only ever been taught to read in french - yet she picked up english reading skills on her own. :)

We're big readers in this house and thankfully our children have inherited our love of reading. They have an 8pm bedtime but will often go early and will read until it's lights out time. We're frequent visitors to the library and love going to find new books to read.

Thankfully all my children now love to read. My ds now age 9 gave me a hard time for a while. This year something changed and he is the first one to enjoy reading time.

The day I found a flashlight and book tucked in the covers of my DD's bed was one of the happiest days of my life.

My DS loves to read and once he starts he doesn't want to stop. I've always been a big reader and have always encouraged reading. When he asks questions about something I'll tell him to go check out a book on it. In the encyclopedia days my parents used to tell me to "go look it up." I think getting the correct info is important.
