KIDPOWER is committed to empowering people to take charge of the emotional and physical well-being of themselves and others. As my recent health scare vividly demonstrates, this involves taking charge of our health. In my case, my stroke could have almost certainly been prevented if I had followed my doctor's advice to take aspirin and lower my chloresterol. In my image of myself, I am not a "pills person" and believed that I could do this on my own by diet and exercise - but kept my life too busy to succeed. Now, in order to help prevent another stroke, I am taking pills, getting enough rest, eating carefully, getting enough exercise and reducing stress. If I get contradictory information about what pills to take, I am doing research until I get the answers that make sense tome.

Has anything ever stopped you from following your doctor's advice for yourself or your children? What could doctors do differently that would help you to be more motivated and successful in taking change of your health?

I am frequently stopped from following through. It is that time factor, plus a little bit of procrastination, and add a little smidgen of invincibility. I am sure if my doctor followed up with me and said, "Hey, I haven't gotten those lab results yet and it's been 3 months", I might be embarrassed into getting my cholesterol checked again. But, that really isn't my doctor's job.
